About Us

Furniture and other wooden treasures, handcrafted in Devon using local materials and contemporary designs that show the natural colours, textures and beauty of the wood.

All of our furniture and wooden items
are carefully handmade in our South Devon workshop. For the majority of our work we use locally grown native hardwoods and softwoods, finished with oils or waxes. Our designs aim to show off the natural beauty of the wood, by using clean lines and uncomplicated shapes.

We find that varnishes form a hard "plastic” layer over the wood and this often has a very negative effect on the finished look of the piece. With varnishes they will always look at their best when brand new and slowly look worse and worse as they age. The reverse is often true with oiled surfaces, as they take on the patina of use.

We source most of our hardwood from a sawmill on Dartmoor, and mainly work with English Oak, Ash, Sycamore and Elm, when we can get it. We also use locally sourced Douglas Fir and Larch for quality joinery items, or occasionally Scandinavian Pine. It is our policy to try to avoid the use of tropical hardwoods and wood from unidentified sources.

We have a range of smaller items for sale on this website, and we also make the following items:

  • Freestanding and built in furniture.
  • Joinery, including kitchens, staircases, doors and windows.
  • Carpentry, repairs and new work including timber frame extensions, summerhouses, outbuildings, roof structures.

If you would like to discuss any projects you have in mind, please contact us. Also, please contact us with any ideas you have about items you would like to see available on the site.

For the items we sell that are made by others (for instance lamp shades) we try to source British made, or at the very least European made stock wherever possible, therefore trying to avoid the pollution caused by shipping items all over the world and at the same time supporting local businesses.

As stated above, we try to source materials as locally as possible to avoid the problems caused by shipping wood around the world. It is sometimes unavoidable to use wood from further afield; especially plywood etc., but we try our best. In some of our items we use some tropical hardwoods such as Mahogany, but this is always from salvaged materials, for instance from scrap doors or door frames.

We will always state where our timber is sourced from, and when we buy wood from nonlocal sources we try to ensure it is FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified.

Our workshop wood waste is used to heat the workshop, therefore saving reliance on fossil fuels. Other waste is sorted and recycled wherever possible. Non-recyclable waste is disposed of responsibly. Sawdust and wood shavings are used for animal bedding, burnt in the workshop fire or composted.

Office waste is recycled, except for paper with customer or business information on it, which is either shredded and composted, or burnt in the workshop fire.

We try to use wood finishes that have a high proportion of natural materials in them, for instance plant based oils.
